About Vape Coils

What are vape coils?

Vape coils (also referred to as atomiser heads) are crucial to any vape. They heat your e-liquid, ensuring a smooth and flavourful vaping experience. The coils consist of a wire, which generates heat delivered from the battery, and a wicking material, which ensures the e-liquid doesn’t burn too fast. A vape coil uses battery power to push a current through the spiral wire wrapped around wicking material soaked in e-liquid to heat it and turn it into vapour.

What are vape coils made of?

These coils are typically made from a variety of conductive, heat-resistant materials. One of the most common choices is stainless steel, known for its durability and ability to withstand high temperatures. Traditionally, the wicking material was a small wad of cotton, but more recently, a ceramic or wire mesh structure has been used. These have a larger surface area, allowing more e-liquid to be heated.

What does the ohm mean on vape coils?

In vaping, an ohm refers to the electrical resistance of a vape coil. The resistance of the wire in a vape coil generates warmth, which heats the e-liquid. Lower ohm coils (sub-ohm) allow more electricity to flow, creating more vapour and flavour, but also higher temperatures and quicker consumption of e-liquid. Higher ohm coils (above 1.0 ohm) heat the e-liquid at lower temperatures, producing less vapour. They are often favoured for mouth-to-lung (MTL) vaping.

Which vape coils are best for flavour?

Mesh vape coils and clapton vape coils are generally recommended for the best flavour. Mesh coils have a large surface area, which provides excellent flavour distribution and a smoother vape. Clapton coils wrap a thin wire tightly around a thicker core wire, trapping more e-liquid to deliver intense flavour.

How long do vape coils last?

Vape coils generally last 1-2 weeks. However, how often you need to replace your vape coil depends on the type, your usage, and the kind of e-liquid you use. Keeping your vape coil clean and well-maintained will help it last longer.

Why do vape coils burn?

Vape coils burn when they have not been fully primed (soaked in enough e-liquid) or are running low on e-liquid. Using the vape coils with the wrong ohm for your vaping device can also cause e-liquid to vapourise too fast, leading to a burnt taste. A build-up of e-liquid can also clog the vape coil, so it is important to regularly clean your vape.
