Do the super-affordable YOOZ Mini rechargeable vape kits and pods measure against more expensive alternatives?

If you have yet to hear about them, YOOZ are an e-cigarette tech company established in 2019 and based in Hong Kong. With over 2000 production staff aspiring to create a better future through research across science, technology and design, the YOOZ ethos is to improve smokers' lives with innovative, quality products less-harmful than tobacco.

You can currently purchase YOOZ vape products worldwide in over 30 countries. Their international portfolio includes a range of disposable vapes and a small range of rechargeable, easy-to-use pod kits, each with compatible prefilled e-liquid pods

Launching in the UK, the marketing stance on the YOOZ Mini Vape Kit (their UK legal TPD version) was as a 'rechargeable disposable' device. However, The UK market would likely class the YOOZ Mini simply as a 'pod kit', a rechargeable battery that requires a compatible range of prefilled disposable pods

From this stance, we still agree with their message that the YOOZ Mini is more eco-friendly than a disposable vape - which is redundant in its entirety once either battery power or e-liquid is depleted - as only the YOOZ pods are disposed of when empty, and the battery can be recharged many times.

YOOZ have also tried to maximise their environmental credentials by pairing two pods with each device, cutting down on packaging more than most alternatives where battery and pods are generally sold separately.

Plenty of pod kits with prefilled pods are available, some from far more established brands than YOOZ, including the Elf Bar Mate, Blu 2.0 or the Vuse ePen.

What sets the YOOZ far, far apart is the price. The YOOZ Mini is aimed at the switchers market like most other devices, but with YOOZ, the initial investment to switch to vaping really is minimal compared to any other current brand.

At this time of writing, you can purchase the YOOZ Mini kit (with two prefilled pods) at a standalone price of just £4.95…this is for the device AND two pods! Apart from requiring a USB-C charging cable (even big brands have recently begun to omit a cable), you have everything you need to start vaping straight away!

As a comparison to illustrate the affordability of the YOOZ Mini, alternative like-for-like products would be; an Elf Bar Mate 500 Kit + 2 pods (currently £13.30), a Blu 2.0 Kit + 2 pods (currently £16.94) and the Vuse ePod + 2 pods (which are presently £11.74).

At such a low price point, you may expect the YOOZ Mini to fall short in terms of longevity, quality, or flavour, but as their ever-growing customer base proves, alongside staff and our own customer review panel opinion, everyone seems to be very pleasantly surprised.

The device

The YOOZ packaging is styled as you would imagine from a budget range. Still, it is recyclable, very compact, contains all the relevant information, warnings, ingredients, and a QR code to check authenticity and serves its purpose well. The kit packaging is plastic wrapped, but the pod packaging is not.

Inside, bar the lack of a charging cable with the kit, everything is pleasingly tidy and foil blister packaged for security and protection. The device body is constructed from a metal alloy with a sleek and snazzy two-tone colour gradient. It feels substantial, of premium quality, and arrives fully charged (luckily) and ready to vape. Once inserted, the pod wobbles slightly, but there is a magnetic connection, so it remains in place well.

6 YOOZ Mini vape kit boxes in different flavours
YOOZ Mini vape pod kit and 2 pods packaging
YOOZ Pod Vape Kit held in a hand

The YOOZ Mini device is rechargeable. It contains a 400mAh battery which claims to last around 4 hours on a single charge, and is charged through a USB C charging port at the bottom. You will need your own cable, but most households have one of these already.

Available in an array of colours, the colour option is loosely based on the flavoured pods included in the box. The Blueberry Plum kit is metallic blue morphing into silver, Banana Smoothie yellow to silver, Mango Tree is orange etc, so if you would rather not own a pink and silver vape but fancy a strawberry flavour, we recommend purchasing an alternative flavoured kit and add on a pack of (very nice) Pink Strawberry pods.

YOOZ Mini pods are, at the time of writing, part of a multi-buy offer (which also includes the kits) to Mix & Match any 3 for £12. So for £4, given that each pod lasts up to 600 puffs (the same as a standard disposable) and there are two pods in each pack, it is glaringly apparent how affordable it can be to vape with YOOZ products.

Testing

All the pod flavours I sampled were punchy, another huge surprise given the price point. It would have completed the range to have tobacco, pure menthol or mint, but the YOOZ flavours are impressive and also quite unique. The draw is tight, vapour production is visible, and gives a fairly smooth vape experience.

The flavours might not be as recognisable as those from Elf Bar or SKE; the YOOZ Kiwi Passion Guava, you likely couldn't guess it as such, but it is so pleasant. Strong, fruity and not too sweet, a rare find in the pod market today.

A range of just ten flavours might be a downside to those preferring the massive array of Elf P1 pod flavours or the more traditional flavours in the Vuse pod range; however, we are sure there will be more in the pipeline.

We don't know how they have done it, but the YOOZ Mini device and range of pods are so impressive for the price that we highly recommend everyone try them!

Trevor's Review

When I first got my hands on a YOOZ pod kit, I quickly left a product page review because I instantly liked it more than I thought I would. For this in-depth review, I have been asked to test some different flavours, and this gives me the perfect opportunity to update my original review with some further thoughts. To be transparent from the start, I still consider the YOOZ mini pod device one of the best around and my personal favourite.

I have tried many pod system vapes; and I mean lots! Sometimes they are awful, but I still try to keep my reviews positive. In this case though, I'm being honest when I say that this review is not one of those. In fact, I love the Yooz Mini!

This is a great starter pack, which includes the device and two x 2ml pods ready to go. The metal device is cute and has a quality feel to it. Inside, it has a 400mAh battery, and as the name suggests, it is a little smaller than others. It is ergonomically designed, as well as lightweight and portable, and the whole base of the unit lights up brightly when in use and when charging, which is a nice touch. To charge it, you will need your own USB C cable, but most of us have them. If not, they are easy to pick up.

The battery lasts for a whole day, and to update my previous observations, I noticed that it takes a little longer to reach full charge, but also lasts longer than other rechargeable pod devices.

The 2ml black pod, which gives a similar amount of puffs as a disposable or other pod system, usually gives up to 600 puffs or 24 to 48 hours of use.

This is a very pocket-friendly device and will also fit easily into any bag.
I really like all the flavours, and they have helped me to avoid smoking cigarettes because I enjoy them so much.

My overall opinion of the YOOZ Mini remains unchanged. It is absolutely fantastic and reliable, and you always get a sweet and satisfying draw.

The starter kit has two easy to use pods to start you off with, and there are plenty of other flavours to try, available in packs of two.

The shape of the unit feels comfortable in the hand, the metal has a silky feel finish, and the unit is of a sturdy build. The easy to charge unit looks trendy with the two tone metal finish, and the LED lights on the bottom light up brighter than on other devices.

A great device and my favourite pod system at the moment. It is ideal for pocket use or to pop in a handbag or rucksack.

Pros:

  • A nice metal device that is not too large.
  • A range of excellent sweet and fruity flavoured pods.
  • Delivers a good draw with plenty of icy sweetness and flavour.
  • Battery holds a good charge in comparison to similar devices.

Cons:

  • You need your own USB C cable for charging.
  • The pods are black so you can't see how much liquid is remaining.

Victoria's Review

I didn't know what to expect from the YOOZ mini pod device, as I haven't tried any of their products before, so of course, I was looking forward to giving them a go.

The YOOZ is a pod system. The main unit is a rechargeable battery, which comes with disposable 'pods'. The pods are the mouthpiece of the device and the chamber which holds the flavoured liquid. Once the liquid is used up, you slide the pod out and dispose of it and replace it with a fresh one.

The device comes with 2 pods to start you off. After that, the replacement pods are available to buy in packs of 2, currently available in about 10 flavours. Each pod is meant to provide 600 puffs, so at £4.99 per pack of 2, they are potentially great value for money.

I thought the YOOZ device was ok to look at. The battery component is metal with a shiny finish. It feels pretty nice to hold. The pods look quite big, different to what I expected from the picture on the packaging.

The first YOOZ device I tried, unfortunately, didn't work at all, so not off to a great start. A little while later, once a replacement arrived, I tried again, this time with more success.

I decided to try the pods that came in the kit first, which just so happened to be Blueberry Plum flavour. I wasn't crazy about the flavour, but I thought it delivered a pretty satisfying throat hit, and the experience was pretty satisfying. I changed the pod out for a different flavour, which was incredibly simple and also pretty satisfying. This time I went for Pink Strawberry, which I liked much better.

I found the device battery and the pods lasted for a really decent length of time. I was quite surprised when the battery died as it didn't give much indication that it was getting low, but that is better than something slowly losing quality as it dies, in my opinion.

During the time that I was trying it out, I did occasionally end up using my disposable vape as well, I still can't quite put my finger on exactly what it is that is lacking from these kinds of devices that stop me from completely replacing disposables and using these instead, but there is definitely something.

Overall though, I would definitely use the YOOZ again and will probably be buying some more replacement pods for it. I'd love to see the range of flavours expand a little more to give some more choice.

Pros:

  • More environmentally friendly than disposables
  • Excellent value for money
  • Very easy to use and change pods
  • Good battery life

Cons:

  • Not a huge range of flavours
  • Doesn’t come with a charging cable
  • Taste isn’t quite as good/strong as most disposable vapes

Tracy's Review

The design of the YOOZ is beautiful, sleek, slim and lightweight. It also fits easily into your hand & pocket. It is designed very well and is rechargeable via a USB-C cable.

I plan to use this for everyday vaping as it is just so easy to use; there are no complicated buttons, you just plug it in to charge. It lights up at the bottom to show when it's charging, and when it's fully charged, the light goes out.

It charges up very fast, and the battery lasts me all day. The pods come pre-filled, so there's no mess, spillage or leakage.

The pre-filled pods come in a great variety of tasty flavours and provide about 600 puffs from each pod. Of the flavours I tried, I liked most of them.

I usually use the elf bar elfa vape kit & pre-filled pods, but the YOOZ is flatter in design and is just as reliable and looks better. Also, the pods seem to have more taste!

The YOOZ mini starter kit is very reasonably priced at just £4.99, and it comes with 2 x pre-filled pods! You can buy the replacement pre-filled pods at £4.99 for a pack of 2, or 3 x packs for just £12.

I am very happy with this product and would recommend it to anyone who wants an affordable, easy to use vape. You will be very happy with this purchase!

Pros:

  • The design is very nice, small slim and lightweight and of good quality.
  • It's affordable and easy to use with no leakage or mess as you just pop in the prefilled pod which is held in place magnetically
  • Also it is very easy and quick to charge. It also lights up at the bottom whilst on charge and the light goes out when the battery is fully charged
  • The battery life once fully charged is brilliant I only have to charge it once a day and it lasts all day
  • The YOOZ also lights up whilst drawing on the vape

Cons:

  • In my opinion there are none!

I don’t know what this tasted of. It was quite fruity, but definitely not very reminiscent of either Blueberry or Plum. I didn’t like this flavour very much at all.

4.0 out of 5

Probably the most subtle of the YOOZ flavours. I like it and I enjoy the slightly floral notes and the Sherbet aftertaste, while the fruit seems to be mild and somewhat hidden in the cool ice.

4.5 out of 5

I liked the Blueberry Plum as it was flavoursome with a distinct fruity taste.

2.5 out of 5

This wasn’t for me. I’m not a huge fan of Menthol type flavours really, and whilst this was quite refreshing, the Lemon combined with the Mint just made it taste a little bit like an air freshener or a cleaning product. Maybe it would fare better with fans of Menthol, it’s hard to say.

5.0 out of 5

This peaked my curiosity as soon as I saw it because it sounded so good. I am pleased to say that it lived up to the hype. Although hard to explain, it is full of flavour with the Lemon and Mint, but it also has Candy Shop Ice in there. It reminds me of one of those trendy jar candles that smell so edible.

This was OK, but not really to my taste

I can’t honestly say that this tasted much like Cranberry or Grape, but, nevertheless, it did still taste pretty good. Very fruity, quite a strong taste. Overall very pleasant, even if not much like the real thing. This was probably my second favourite flavour.

4.0 out of 5

This is a little lighter than the others as it does not have overly strong fruit flavours. It is still cool and sweet tasting, with a hint of Parma Violet.

5.0 out of 5

This is full of flavour and above all my favourite. I love the Grape taste!

This was a really nice flavour, quite sweet but also quite mellow, not overly powerful. Just right really, it made for a very pleasant vaping experience, definitely my favourite of the bunch.

4.0 out of 5

This has a slightly Lemonade taste to it. You still get a good icy flavour with the Strawberry being not too overpowering, and the sweet shop thrown in for good measure.

4.0 out of 5

This was a refreshing cool and light flavour.

This was really nice and tasty. Very fruity, like a tropical fruit juice. I did find the flavour to be a little overwhelming after a while, and needed to take a break from it every now and then. Good, but not as palatable as the Strawberry or Cranberry Grape in my opinion.

5.0 out of 5

Another full on fruit bowl of tropical delights mixed in with icy cool sweetness.
This one is for those of you like me who like a full flavour.

Pleasant tasting and enjoyable

Conclusion

How well does Yooz compare with other pod kits?

Well, our staff and customer panel conclusion is… surprisingly well!

In this case, YOOZ have achieved the impressive goal of under-promising and over-delivering. The highly competitive current price of £4.95, including pods (or £4 as a multi-buy), leads to the assumption that this is a budget range, but it is far from that. The panel was genuinely impressed by its design, aesthetics, flavours (most of the time), ease of use, convenience, and reliability.

The main downside was the lack of a USB-C charging cable, but these are becoming relatively ubiquitous and excluding one helps maintain competitive pricing while reducing the environmental footprint. Many a vaper will have a drawer crammed full of redundant charging cables.

This device is ideally positioned for switchers - those switching from cigarettes to vaping and those switching from disposable vapes to pod kits. Switching is a trend that will only grow going forward, whether by choice or government intervention.

Driven by the need to quit smoking, the desire to reduce environmental impact, or to reduce expense during a cost of living crisis, the low-price and high puff count of the YOOZ Mini means it is a low-cost, reliable option for those wishing to dip their toe in the waters of pod kits.

It seems likely that once you try the YOOZ device, you will stick with it, even as a backup option. Two of our panel gave it high praise, and one with a more nuanced reaction admitted that she, too, would purchase more pods.

Time is limited for traditional plastic vapes due to their environmental impact. The next step for vapers is to embrace the pod kit as a better, if still not ideal, alternative, and the YOOZ Mini has proved itself perfect for the job.

The top selling points aside from the price, in our opinion, are;

  1. Both device and packaging are small, using fewer resources to manufacture, and our panel found it easy to fit in a pocket or bag.
  2. Made from a two-tone metal alloy, it stands out, looks stylish and is easier to recycle than plastic.
  3. From the small cardboard YOOZ Mini box, you can enjoy up to 1200 puffs. This is a lot compared to the equivalent 2 x Elf Bars.
  4. It is simple to use and has good battery life.

Like its near-namesake, the 1960s Mini Cooper car, it is small, elegant, comes in a range of rather snazzy colours and has been carefully designed to meet a market need. Only time will tell if the YOOZ Mini will be as iconic. Still, they are both innovative and a triumph of good research and development.

I agree with this blog my yooz is all I use now. Took a punt on what appeared to be a very budget style kit and I absolutely love it! Flavours are great and so cheap that I have a couple of back up batteries. I hope the price doesn’t go up anytime soon. The only negative for me is that I can only get the pods online as have never seen in shops but this may change in time I suppose.

Tried the Blueberry Plum , not for me but otherwise a great little pod kit. Such great value for money. My new go to out and about device.

I have just started trying pod kits after being on disposables when I first started trying to give up smoking in 2017. I wasn’t sure what to expect when I bought my YOOZ after reading this review. I was worried it would not only be low priced but cheap. However I was pleasantly surprised. It does not feel cheap, in fact the metal body and the colour scheme feel much better than an Elf 600. Much more solid and a lot less garish. The flavours are nice too. I particularly like the Pink Lemon.

A very reasonably priced compact pod kit. I was not aware of Yooz previously but if they keep up this standard I will definitely be keeping an eye out for future e-cigarettes and pod kits from this brand.

A very competently designed product.

Great little device. Have been thinking of switching to pod kits for a while and this seemed an ideal way to test them out. Great price and some super flavours.
